Viriato FernandesSome Lesser Known Facts About Viriato Fernandes

  • In August 1991, after graduating from College, Viriato Fernandes began working for the  Indian Naval Services at Mandovi.  He later opted for the aviation branch and completed aeronautics specialisation in 1995. Then, he qualified on the Dornier aircraft.
  • While pursuing advanced aeronautical training in Cochin, India, he focused on mastering the piloting of various aircraft types including Chetak helicopters, Sea Harrier jets, and Dornier turboprop planes.
  • After completing his training, Fernandes was appointed as an air engineering officer at the Indian naval air station INS Hans in Goa.
  • He has served with the Indian Navy’s INAS 310 squadron known as “The Cobras”.
  • In the late 1990s, during the Pokhran-II testing and the rising tensions between India and Pakistan, he was deployed to the Indo-Pakistani border region. There he along with his fellow aviators monitored the movements and activities of Pakistani aircraft and military forces.
  • In 1999, he fought during the Kargil War as part of the aviation squad.
  • He was posted in the Andaman during the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. At the time, he believed that he would not live to see another day but he was able to fulfil his duty.
  • In 2005, he became the Chief Engineer on an Indian Naval Ship and worked there for more than a year up until September 2006.
  • In 2006, he joined the Defence Materiel Organisation of the Indian Naval Services in the Controller Material Planning and Procurement department and worked there for 4 years until June 2011.
  • In June 2011, he became the Regional Operations Manager for the Indian Naval Canteen Service (INCS) in Goa, India.
  • In September 2015, he started working with the Strategic Level Management at the Indian Navy in Vasco Da Gama, Goa.
  • In 2018, he opted for an early retirement.
  • In 2021, he joined the Indian National Congress.

  • In November 2023, Captain Viriato Fernandes wrote a letter to the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in support of the 8 ex-naval officers and asked him to back the 8 ex-Navy officers from Qatar who have been sentenced to death by a Qatar court for their alleged involvement in an “espionage case.”
