Some Lesser Known Facts About Washington Sundar
- Washington Sundar was born into a cricket-loving family, as his father, M Sundar, played domestic cricket.
- When his father used to play cricket, an ex-army man named P.D. Washington lived near their home in Triplicane.
- The person liked his father’s name and helped him become a cricketer by paying for his school fees, books, and cricket equipment. He also supported him on the field.
- Washington Sundar was born a few months after P.D. Washington passed away in 1999. The delivery was difficult, but he survived.
- According to the Hindu traditions of their family, his father was named him Srinivasan, but he later changed the name to Washington in memory of the deceased army official who helped him.
- His father also said that if he ever had a second son, he would have named him Washington Junior.
- He started training in cricket with his elder sister, Shailaja, under his father, who wanted him to become a batsman.
- He often watched cricket videos of cricketers and copied their stances. He also urged his sister to bowl to him whenever he didn’t play with other kids in his neighbourhood.
- He was playing in an Under-14 school match at the age of 9 when a ball hit him on the side of his head (on the temple). He was taken to the hospital, where he received 5 stitches.
- He returned to the match the next day and won the game by scoring 39 runs not out.
- During his teenage years, he started training under former Indian bowler M. Venkataramana, who told him to become a bowler.
- He finished as the leading runscorer of Tamil Nadu in the Under-16 cricket tournaments in 2013, after which BCCI chose him for a 40-day training camp in the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
- He also played for India in the Under-19 World Cup.
- He made headlines in 2017 when the Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) selected him as a replacement for Ravichandran Ashwin in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
- In the 2018 IPL auction, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) acquired him for Rs 3.2 crores against his base price of Rs 1.5 crore.
- In his debut test innings against Australia, he scored 62 runs. During the innings, he hit a ‘no look’ six on a Nathan Lyon delivery, which became very popular.
- He didn’t have pads when the match started. The fielding coach R Sridhar tried to arrange from the Australian team, but they refused because of COVID-19. He later went out and bought a new pair of pads while the match was going on.

- On 6 April 2025, while playing for the Gujarat Titans (GT) against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), he was dismissed on 49 runs on a delivery from Mohammed Shami.
