  • She used to be an introvert in her childhood and used to hide in her room when guests arrived at her home.
  • Her father suffered major losses in his business and died at the age of 52, at that time, she was 17 years old.

  • While growing up, she was very religious. She used to eat only two days a week i.e. Sunday and Wednesday and fast the rest of the days. She even used to sit in the courtyard of Datta Mandir in Matunga. However, after her father’s demise, her faith in God was shaken. She once said that her husband Pankaj made her re-believe in religion.
  • In her teens, she started working as a tuition teacher for her pocket money. She also used to work at a samaj in Matunga where she packed khakras and papads.
  • Later, she applied at All India Radio for the position of voiceover artist and radio drama actor. However, she was rejected as they did not like her voice. However, after the release of her debut Hindi film, All India Radio offered her a job for her husky voice. [5]Filmfare

  • She started her career as a theatre artist. She performed in the Hindi theatre play ‘Maina Gurjari,’ directed by her mother.
  • She then performed in the Hindi theatre play Biwiyon Ka Madersa. While she was performing, she was spotted by the Indian actor Shashi Kapoor‘s wife Jennifer Kendal, and Jennifer offered Supriya a role in her film.

  • In an interview, she shared that the Indian film director Shyam Babu once rejected her for being fat.
  • She has appeared in various Hindi films like ‘Bazaar’ (1982), ‘Masoom’ (1983), ‘Arjun’ (1985), ‘Dilwaala’ (1986), ‘Shahenshah’ (1988), and ‘Madhosh’ (1994). After the release of Madhosh, she took a break of around seven years from Hindi films.

  • Her first marriage was with her mother’s friend’s son. However, within a few days of her marriage, she started regretting it, and within one year of her marriage, she got divorced.
  • In 1986, while she was shooting for the Hindi film ‘Agla Mausam’ (shelved), she met the Indian actor Pankaj Kapur (seven and a half years older than her). Gradually, they became good friends and dated for around two years. They got married in 1988. At that time Pankaj was divorced from his first wife Neelima Azeem and Supriya was also divorced.
  • In 1987, she appeared in the Hindi TV films ‘Naqli Chehra’ and ‘Shahadat.’
  • In 1994, Supriya, along with her husband Pankaj Kapur, started a TV production house named Grass Company.
  • In 2002, she made a comeback with the Hindi film ‘Jackpot 2 Crore.’ She then appeared in many Hindi films like ‘Sarkar’ (2005), ‘Sarkar Raj’ (2008), ‘Delhi 6’ (2009), ‘Wake Up Sid’ (2009), and ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela’ (2013).
