Some Lesser Known Facts About Madan Mitra

• Madan Mitra was born into an aristocratic family.

• He grew up in a traditional, landowning, and business family of Bhawanipore, South Kolkata, India.

• After completing his formal education, he worked in the transport business of his family for some time and drove taxis during this period.

• Madan Mitra then served at the United India Insurance for some time and took voluntary retirement in 2004.

• In 1973, he was selected as the president of the students’ union at Ashutosh College in Kolkata, West Bengal.

• He then entered politics and became the president of the Indian Youth Congress in South Kolkata.

• Initially, Madan Mitra became a part of the Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi group.

• He was reportedly a close associate of then Union Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, who helped him to get high positions in the Indian Youth Congress.

• In 1976, Madan Mitra left Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi group and joined the Somen Mitra group.

• During the 1990s, Madan Mitra formed a taxi drivers’ union. During the same period, he also took control of the employees’ union of SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, India.

• He then became one of the founding members and chief organizational architects of TMC.

• In 2000, Madan Mitra was appointed as the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress.

• In 2004, he was designated as the president of the Trinamool Youth Congress.

• In 2009, he contested the West Bengal Legislative Assembly election on the ticket of TMC from the Bishnupur West constituency and won. Madan Mitra served as an MLA from the same constituency till 2011.

• In 2011, he re-contested the West Bengal Legislative Assembly election on the ticket of TMC from the Kamarhati constituency and became an MLA.

• On 20 May 2011, he was appointed as a Cabinet Minister for Sports and Minister for Transport in the first Mamata Banerjee government. He served in the position till 18 November 2015.

• In 2012, Madan Mitra was criticised for his remarks, questioning the character of Suzette Jordan, the Park Street rape survivor. He questioned her character for being with strangers at 2 a.m.

• On 13 December 2014, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested him for his involvement in the Saradha Group financial scam.

• After his arrest, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee claimed in the media that his arrest was an act of political revenge by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

• When Madan Mitra was in jail, he complained that he was not feeling well. After that, he was admitted to a hospital in November 2015.

• Soon, he was named as an accused in the Saradha Group financial scandal.

• On 18 November 2015, he resigned from the West Bengal Cabinet.

• In September 2016, he was granted bail in the Saradha case.

• His opponent and Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate Manash Mukherjee defeated him by 4,198 votes.

• In September 2017, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigated him after he caught taking bribe on camera during the Narada sting operation.

• On 26 April 2019, Mamata Banerjee announced that Madan Mitra would contest the Bhatpara Assembly by-election. However, he lost the by-election to his opponent Pawan Kumar Singh.

• On 2 May 2021, he became a Member of West Bengal Legislative Assembly from the Kamarhati constituency.

• After that, he was appointed as the Chairman of the West Bengal Transport Corporation. He served in the position till 2026.

• On 17 May 2021, the CBI arrested Madan Mitra in connection with the Narada sting case.

• The other people who were arrested along with him were minister Subrata Mukherjee, minister Firhad Hakim, and former Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee. On 28 May 2021, he was granted bail.

• In August 2023, Madan Mitra made his acting debut with the film Oh! Lovely, which was directed by Haranath Chakraborty.

• He then went on to appear in many films, including Sentimentaaal (2024) and Lokkhikantopur Local (2025).

• In February 2025, Madan Mitra publicly apologized to his party after creating an internal controversy within the party. He earlier claimed that many important posts in TMC and Bengal Cabinet were being given in exchange for money.

• That same year, at an event, he stated that the rape of a student could have been prevented if she had not gone alone to her college.
• After that, his statement went viral, and he was criticized for being insensitive.

• In June 2025, All India Trinamool Congress issued Madan Mitra a show-cause notice for his statement.

• In December 2025, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticised him when he claimed in one of his political speeches that Lord Ram was a Muslim and did not have a surname.

• In July 2026, Madan Mitra openly criticized Mamata Banerjee in the public. He compared her to some blind figures from Indian mythology. He also called her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, a political villain.

• In 2026, he contested the West Bengal Legislative Assembly election and was elected as the MLA from the Kamarhati constituency.

• However, the Trinamool Congress failed to win a majority in the elections.

• After the election results, the party split and became known as the 2026 All India Trinamool Congress split.

• On 12 June 2026, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided his seven properties in a money laundering case. Reportedly, all these properties were related to the alleged municipality recruitment scam.

• The ED claimed that during investigation it found that Madan Mitra accepted cash and gold as bribes during municipal recruitment. ED added that many candidates who were not deserving the seats were selected. he broke many rules during the recruitment process.

• The agency also claimed that it recovered cash and important documents under his bed at his home. They also found many undisclosed bank accounts linked to him.

• Madan Mitra left the original Trinamool Congress on 15 July 2026 and joined the rebel TMC group, which was led by Ritabrata Banerjee, a Leader of the Opposition. He resigned from all his organizational positions in the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).

• During a media talk, he claimed that the internal dominance of Abhishek Banerjee within the party was the main reason for his resignation. After that, he continued working as an independent/rebel MLA.

• Many media outlets and his fans often call him “MM” or the “Colourful Boy” of Bengal politics.

• Apart from being a politician and an actor, Madan Mitra is also a singer who has released songs that mix traditional Bengali music with hip-hop and trap beats. He had lent his voice to the main track of the 2023 film “Oh Lovely.”
