  • He was brought up in Chennai, Tamil Nadu at his maternal grandmother’s house. Reportedly, his educational performance was the responsibility of his elder brother, Ramesh Babu as his father was busy with his films. In his childhood, Mahesh Babu used to play cricket at the VGP Golden beach in Madras with his brother and sisters.
  • According to Mahesh Babu, the Telugu actor Vijay was his classmate during his college days. Mahesh Babu learnt acting skills from the Telugu director L. Satyanand in Vishakhapatnam for four months after completing his formal education. Mahesh Babu could not read and write Telugu; however, he can speak the language fluently.
  • Ramesh Babu, his elder brother, died on 8 January 2022 in Hyderabad after suffering from severe liver complications. The well-known Indian businessman and a Member of Parliament from the Telugu Desam Party, Galla Jayadev is Mahesh Babu’s brother-in-law and husband of his elder sister, Padmavathi. His elder sister, Manjula is a film director and producer in Telugu cinema. His younger sister, Priyadarshini’s husband Sudheer Babu was inducted into the film industry by the Babu family after Sudheer’s marriage to Priyadarshini. His father had a second wife named Vijaya Nirmala, who was a renowned Telugu actress. Vijaya Nirmala has a son named Naresh, who is a Telugu actor and stepbrother of Mahesh Babu.
  • Mahesh Babu was in a four years relationship with actress Namrata Shirodkar before getting married to her in 2005. The couple entered wedlock during the picturisation of the film Athadu in Mumbai. Reportedly, they preserved their stem cells in stem cell banking before Namrata’s second delivery and ensured better immunity for the future. Namrata is three years older than Mahesh Babu, and according to some media sources, initially, Mahesh Babu’s father did not agree to their relationship, but Mahesh’s sister, Manjula convinced Krishna Ghattamaneni for the marriage of Mahesh and Namrata.
  • In his childhood, Mahesh used to visit the film sets along with his father. In 1979, he, along with his elder brother, visited the sets of the film Needa, where Mahesh was offered the role of child artist by the director of the film Dasari Narayana Rao. Mahesh began working as a child artist at the age of four.

  • At the age of eight, in 1983, Mahesh Babu appeared in the film Poratam as a child artist at the recommendation of the Telugu filmmaker Kodi Ramakrishna. Reportedly, he was initially reluctant to act in the film; but later he was convinced to act by the crew of the film. Later, he appeared as a child artist in several Telugu films such as Sankharavam (1987), Bazaar Rowdy (1988), Mugguru Kodukulu (1988), and Gudachari 117 (1989). One of his memorable roles was his double role in the film Koduku Diddina Kapuram in 1989.

  • At the age of fifteen, he appeared in two films Bala Chandrudu and Anna Thammudu, which earned him huge appreciation from film critics for his performance.
  • In 1999, he made his acting debut in a lead role in the film Raja Kumarudu, which was directed by K. Raghavendra Rao, opposite famous actress Priety Zinta. The film was screened in eighty cinema halls for the first fifty days, and then it was screened in forty-four cinema halls for the next hundred days and made a collection of rupees 10.51 crores in Andhra Pradesh. After the film became a hit, he was titled Prince by his fans. Later, the film was released in two more languages, Hindi and Tamil. In Hindi, it was released with the name Prince No. 1, and in Tamil, it was released with the name Kaadhal Vennila. Raja Kumarudu was released in the Tamil language with the name Ivan Oru Thunichalkaran in January 2017.

  • His two films Yuvaraju and Vamsi failed at the box office in 2002. He then appeared in Krishna Vamsi’s film Murari in 2003. His 2003 film Okkadu opposite actress Bhumika Chawla became the highest-grossing Telugu film of the year and collected rupees 23 crores at the box office. In the same year, his performance in the film Nijam earned him the Nandi Best Actor Award; however, the film was a failure and is credited for introducing the Dolby EX surround system in Telugu cinema. His performance in the film was acclaimed by film critics such as Vijayalaxmi of Rediff.com penned that the second half of the film was watchable only because of Mahesh. She wrote,

    Mahesh tries his best, but cannot save this routine tale of vendetta. After Okadu, this is another good performance from the young actor. Nijam’s second half is watchable only because of him.”

  • He was then cast in the film Nanni opposite actress Amisha Patel in 2004. The film failed at the box office. In the same year, his performance in the film Arjun earned him the Nandi Special Jury Award. He then worked opposite Telugu actress Trisha Krishnan in Athadu, one of the highest-grossing films of the year, in 2005. The film collected rupees 22 crores in its first week of release and was a hit.

  • His 2006 film Pokiri was screened at the 7th IIFA Awards in Dubai. The film became the highest-grossing Telugu film of the year and was produced by Jagannadh and Manjula. Several film critics appreciated him for his performance in the film. The Hindu writer Y. Sunita Chowdary titled Mahesh Babu a star. She penned,

    Mahesh’s understated performance in Pokiri allows him effortlessly to reclaim the title of a star, overshadowing more questionable recent career choices.”

  • His 2006 film Sainikudu opposite actress Trisha failed at the box office. He then appeared in his brother’s film Athidhi opposite actress Amrita Rao in 2007. The promotion of the film was organised by UTV Motion Pictures, who acquired the rights to promote the film for rupees 18.5 crores from its owners. This film was a debut venture for UTV Motion Pictures. In the following year, he dubbed his voice for the film Jalsa.
