Mass Shooting in the New York City Subway
Several people were shot on the New York City Subway in Sunset Park, Brooklyn on 12 April 2022 by an attacker on a Manhattan-bound N subway car in a mass shooting that started at 8:24 a.m. According to sources, after the train left the 59th Street station, the attacker donned a gas mask and dumped two smoke canisters, commonly purchased online, into a train car, then fired a .380 caliber handgun as the train approached the 36th Street station. The suspect was seen mumbling before putting on the gas mask, according to reports. At least 33 shots were fired by the attacker before the gun jammed, according to a police official. He said, It was hard to breathe, it was hard to see. It was hard to hear or pay attention to what was going on with the chaos that was happening.”

More Injuries During Evacuation
Arriving at 36th Street, the injured and horrified passengers disembarked at the platform, where police officers had already arrived by 8:30 a.m. [3]The New York Daily News An official with the police department says there were no working cameras at the 36th Street station caused by a computer glitch, so a bystander’s cellphone video unveiled the suspect. The footage also showed the chaos associated with the evacuation. A panic ensued after the police instructed passengers to leave 25th Street station after the train arrived, when passengers started running for the exits in a panic. This resulted in more injuries. Search and seizure
Investigations after the incident led to the recovery of a firearm, three magazines, a hatchet, gasoline, four smoke grenades, and a bag of consumer fireworks. There was no evidence that the gun was stolen, according to the police.
A credit card was also recovered from the scene, and the card was claimed to have been used to rent a U-Haul. A police report says the shooter had keys to the vehicle in his possession. In the late afternoon of 12 April 2022, investigators traced the vehicle to Gravesend, Brooklyn, just five miles from the subway station. Frank R. James: The Person of Interest
In the wake of the investigation and recovery of the subway attack, New York City Police announced a person of interest. They released a photo of the suspect and said that they were looking for Frank James. They also asked the public to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers if they knew where the suspects were. The gunman was deemed an ‘active shooter’ by the police. The police found out that James rented the van in Philadelphia. A reward of $50,000 was announced by the police for those who would inform them about the whereabouts of the suspect. Police commissioner Keechant Sewell, in a press conferecne on the evening of 12 April 2022, said that the could figure out the motive of the suspect behind the attack. He said,
At this time, we still do not know the suspect’s motivation. Clearly this individual boarded the train and was intent on violence.”

Reactions
Following the incident of mass shooting, the White House released a statement and said that President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Attorney General Merrick Garland, and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas were informed about the situation. In his statement, President Joe Biden said that he was parying for the recovery of the injured people. He said,
We’re grateful for all the first responders … including civilians, who didn’t hesitate to help their fellow passengers.”
During his visit at Maimondes Hospital, where the injured victims were recuperating, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul consoled the victims and prayed for their speedy recovery.
