Shot and injured Mahesh Gaikwad inside a police station

Because of a dispute over property, a case was registered against Ganpat Gaikwad on 2 February 2024 for shooting and injuring politician Mahesh Gaikwad inside a police station. The landowner filed a complaint under the SC & ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, claiming that Gaikwad had made casteist remarks and mistreated and insulted her and her family. Mahesh Gaikwad, the leader of the Kalyan Shiv Sena, was shot six times by Gaikwad, who also wounded Rahul Patil, his friend, inside the senior inspector's cabin at the Hill Line police station. In an interview, after the incident, he claimed that he did it to protect his son and had no regret. He said,

"It is Shinde who has made a criminal out of me today. I was frustrated and that is the reason I opened fire. I do not have any regrets. If my son is beaten up inside the police station what do you expect me to do. I was not planning to kill them but if someone behaves this way right in front of police then I have to act in self defense.”
