• He started his political journey in 1990. He contested the assembly elections from the Harsud constituency in Madhya Pradesh as a BJP candidate and won.

• He then represented the same constituency in 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008, 2013, 2018, and 2023.

• He has served as an education minister, forest minister, minister for Tribal Affairs, Tourism, Public Asset Management, Panchayat Raj, and Rural Development in Madhya Pradesh.

• In 2013, his elder brother, Ajay Shah, joined the Congress party.

• That same year, he quit the BJP after he made sexist comments about the wife of Shivraj Singh Chouhan, then-Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. Soon, he rejoined the party.

• As the education minister of Madhya Pradesh, he imposed a rule that all the students in schools should answer the roll call by saying Jai Hind.

• In July 2024, he announced that the schools and madrasas which would not play the national anthem would not be granted government funding.
• In December 2024, he went on a picnic in the Satpura Tiger Reserve, and some of his pictures while enjoying non vegetarian food went viral on social media. Many wildlife activists then criticised him, and an investigation was started against him. In the video, he was heard saying,
