Some Lesser Known Facts About Lateef Fatima Khan
- A first-class magistrate, Fatima Khan, mainly used to deal with juvenile cases. Fatima was one of the longest-serving female Executive Magistrates.
- She was also an active social worker.
- Lateef Fatima Khan’s father, Iftikhar Ahmed, was the chief government engineer of the Karnataka state, who played a huge role in building the Mangalore port in the 1960s.
- According to some sources, Lateef Fatima Khan was the adopted daughter of Major General Shah Nawaz Khan who served as a General in the Indian National Army of Subash Chandra Bose. However, no evidence about it could be found.
- Once, in an interview, while talking about his family’s connection with Major General Shah Nawaz Khan, Shah Rukh Khan said,
My family especially my father, were very closely connected with the country’s politics of those times (pre-independence India) because my father himself was the youngest freedom fighter of this country and related to people like General Shahnawaz.”
- Once, during World War II, Lateef Fatima Khan and her family met with an accident and their car overturned near India Gate in Delhi. Meer Taj Mohammed Khan, a lawyer, who was passing by, saw them and took them to a hospital, where he donated blood to save Fatima’s life.
- After the family recovered from their injuries, Fatima’s father decided to get his elder daughter married to Meer Taj Mohammed. However, Meer refused the proposal and instead told them that he wanted to marry the girl, to whom he donated blood.
- Although Fatima was already engaged to a cricketer named Abbas Ali Baig, at that time, Fatima’s father broke the engagement and accepted Meer Taj Mohammed’s proposal to marry Fatima.
- After their marriage in 1959, Lateef Fatima Khan began living with Mir Taj Mohammed Khan at a rented apartment in the Rajendra Nagar neighbourhood of New Delhi.
- Fatima’s first child, Shah Rukh Khan, was adopted by her mother as they didn’t have a boy at their home. Shah Rukh lived with his maternal grandparents for around five years and later went back to his parents.
- In 1981, Fatima lost her husband to Cancer. In an interview, while talking about the difficult times his mother had to face, Shah Rukh Khan said,
One injection used to cost about Rs 5000 and we had to organize about 23 injections in ten days. It was an expensive affair and our business went down. At that time my mother would work day and night. She would get the money some way. She really looked after my father. After his death in ’81 she revived his business and ran it proficiently.”

I am getting a major award in the film industry, she’s still not here. This one’s for you Ma.”

- In an interview, Shah Rukh Khan shared that it was his mother who helped him improve his Hindi. He said that he was very poor in Hindi and usually scored less in Hindi examinations. He also shared that the first film that his mother took him to watch was Dev Anand’s Joshilaa.
