Some Lesser Known Facts About Sahil Parakh

  • Sahil Parakh is from Nashik, although he was born in Pune.
  • His father, from a young age, introduced him to cricket. His father was a club level cricketer and wanted his son to play cricket.
  • He began his cricketing career at the age of five, at the Nashik Cricket Academy (Parijat Nagar).
  • Initially, the coaches at the academy did not accept him due to his young age, but after a trial, he was admitted. Shantanu Matse, Makarandok Sir, Amit Patil and Shrirang Kapse were the coaches at his academy.
  • Kapse has been his personal coach right from the beginning. Bharat Sormale is his gym trainer, who has been training him since he was young.
  • When he joined school, there was no cricket team. He forced the school to have cricket, if not, he would move schools. The school relented.
  • Colony cricket and school nets, he played them all into his teenage years. He always played positively.
  • He is a stroke player at heart and picked up the reverse sweep and square cut quite early, playing both shots in the early days, before including them in his practice.
  • His mother Snehal Parakh took him to Pune as early as 3 or 4 am when he was very young on match days, coming back to Nashik in between matches and returning to Pune.
  • He did so for four to five years. He didn’t ever complain about these trips.
  • On the district side, he played for Nashik District Cricket Association (NDCA) and scored a lot in college club cricket for the academy.
  • In doing so, he was selected to play for the Nashik district team in all age groups. He went on to captain the Nashik district Under-19 team.
  • His district coaches were Vinod Shah, Sameer Rakte, Tarun Gupta, Satish Gaikwad and Shantaram Mane and the NDCA’s fitness coach was Vinod Yadav.
  • India’s cricket was badly hit with the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 but he continued his training.
  • His father constructed a turf on their terrace in Nashik just three or four days after the lockdown began.
  • He practised batting for four to five hours a day. The terrace was lit up, so he could practise day and night.
  • Coach Shrirang Kapse came to his house, bowled to him during the lockdown period. He had continuous practice for those months.
  • He played good cricket in the district Invitation League and was selected in the Maharashtra Under-16 team.
  • His tour to Rajkot got cancelled because of the pandemic. He continued to work on his game.
  • He was again selected for Maharashtra Under-16 and was part of the Vijay Merchant Trophy where he top-scored for Maharashtra with 223 not out against Sikkim.
  • He was awarded the Maharashtra Best Batsman Award and the D.B. Deodhar Award for this.
  • He was promoted to the Maharashtra Under-19 side and made vice-captain. He went on to captain the Maharashtra Under-19 squad, for which he performed in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy.
  • With strong performances in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, he got selected for India D in the BCCI Challenger Trophy.
  • He was then called to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for three years.
  • He scored the most runs playing for India B in the BCCI Inter-NCA Under-19 tournament.
  • Then he was selected to the High Performance Camp, where he was further selected for the India Under-19 team.
  • In September 2024, he played for India Under-19 against Australia in a Youth ODI and, in 75 balls, he hit 14 fours and five sixes, scoring 109 not out.

  • The match was won by India by nine wickets in 22 overs in that chase. His grandparents and parents had flown to Puducherry to watch the matches.
  • When he reached his century, his grandfather danced on the ground. So many calls to his family came in that they didn’t record the innings.
  • He hit the century after being told by coach Rishikesh Kanetkar, at 60, that the innings would be meaningless until he got to a century. He was unbeaten.
  • He was also exposed to a wider audience at the NCA in Bengaluru after he smacked a six over the boundary to India pacer Prasidh Krishna in a net session.
  • Indeed, Krishna came to him the next day and asked to bat him, and he faced him for an hour.
  • His teammate from NCA was Vaibhav Suryavanshi, with whom he is good friends. They are not selected in the same team for practice during camp as they are both attacking players.

  • He had trials with seven IPL teams before being selected. Pathum Nissanka was replaced at the top of the order by Delhi Capitals.
  • He was only the second player from Nashik to be part of the IPL, after Ramkrishna Ghosh.
  • He made his debut just 72 hours after a bad injury in net practice, where he was hit in the face by a bouncer delivered by a fast bowler, hitting him through the grille of his helmet, leaving him bleeding and in need of medical attention.

  • His eyes and jaw bones were intact, the doctors said. With bandages around his face, he asked the doctors if he would be able to play in the game two days later.
