Dharam Dev Pishorimal Anand (26 September 1923 – 3 December 2011), better known as Dev Anand, was an Indian film actor, writer, director, producer, and comedian known for his notable works in the history of Indian cinema. Part of the Anand family, he co-founded Navketan Films in 1949 with his elder brother Chetan Anand. Anand is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema. And for his exemplary work, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2001 by the President of India.
1. Johny Mera Naam (1970)
Johny Mera Naam is a thriller, crime action film directed by Vijay Anand. The film stars the director’s brother, Dev Anand and Pran in the roles of brothers separated in childhood.
Plot: When Heeralal, a criminal, gets arrested, he befriends Johny in prison. He then seeks Johny’s help in executing his purpose of smuggling a few diamonds.
2. Guide (1965)
Guide is a romantic drama film starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman. It was directed by Vijay Anand, who contributed to the screenplay. The film is based on the novel The Guide, by R. K. Narayan.
Plot: A tourist guide meets an unfortunate married woman who wants to take up dancing. With his motivation, she becomes a successful dancer but success corrupts the man’s mind.
3. Jewel Thief (1967)
Jewel Thief is a spy thriller Hindi film directed by Vijay Anand. The film stars Dev Anand, Vyjayantimala and Ashok Kumar in the lead roles. It also features four bond girl-like actresses portrayed by Tanuja, Helen, Faryal and Anju Mahendru with other actors appearing in supporting roles.
Plot: Vinay, finds himself constantly mistaken for a look-alike jewel thief, Amar. To clear his name, he joins hands with the police to impersonate the thief, and crack the crime ring. Does he succeed?
4. Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963)
Tere Ghar Ke Samne is a classic 1963 Hindi film. Released on Tuesday, 1 January 1963, it was a major hit in India, taking the sixth spot in highest grossing films of the year. The film, produced by Dev Anand and written and directed by his brother Vijay Anand, is the duo’s fourth collaboration after the hits Nau Do Gyarah (1957), Kala Bazar (1960) and Hum Dono (1961).
Plot: An engineer falls in love with a girl whose father is his father’s business rival. Her father unknowingly assigns him the contract of constructing his house. Will both the parents accept their love?
5. Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai (1961)
Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai is a romance movie that became a box office hit. It was written, produced, and directed by Nasir Hussain. The first film Hussain ever produced, it featured Dev Anand and Hussain fixture Asha Parekh in the leading roles.
Plot: Nisha lives a very wealthy lifestyle in Neelgaon, with her father, Sardar Roop Singh. She is now of marriageable age, and her dad wants her to marry his friend’s son, Sohan, but Nisha dislikes him.
6. Bombai Ka Babu (1960)
Bombai Ka Babu is a thriller film that became a box office hit. It was written, produced, and directed by Nasir Hussain. The first film Hussain ever produced, it featured Dev Anand and Hussain fixture Asha Parekh in the leading roles.
Plot: When Babu tries to leave crime, he accidentally kills his partner in the fight that follows. He flees town but is recognised by a man who forces him to masquerade as the sole heir of a wealthy man
7. Amir Garib (1974)
Amir Garib is a thriller movie produced and directed by Mohan Kumar. The film stars Dev Anand, Hema Malini, Premnath, Tanuja, Sujit Kumar and Ranjit. The film’s music is by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
Plot: A man lives a dual life, that of a magician and the other as a thief whose motive is to help the unfortunate and underprivileged. He falls in love with a girl but later finds out that she is not who she claims to be.
8. Asli-Naqli (1962)
Asli-Naqli is a drama film produced by L.B Lachman and L.B Thakur. The film is directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and stars Dev Anand, Sadhana Shivdasani. The film became a box office hit.
Plot: Anand, a rich man disguised as a poor and idle, falls in love with Renu. But when Renu finds out the truth, she feels cheated.
9. Warrant (1975)
Warrant is a thriller film directed by Raj Khosla and written by Rajinder Singh Bedi. The film stars Dev Anand and Suchitra Sen in her rare appearance in Hindi cinema.
Plot: Jail warden Arun believes convict Dinesh is clean and so helps him escape. Soon the police and the underworld are on a manhunt to get him.
10. Banarasi Babu (1973)
Banarasi Babu is a romantic film directed by Shankar Mukherjee. The film stars Dev Anand, Yogeeta Bali, Rakhee, I. S. Johar and Bhagwan.
Plot: Sohan Lal, a rich businessman, is abducted and imprisoned. When Gulabiya helps him to escape from the prison, he meets with an accident. He then attempts to sort out his jeopardised life.
