ControversyPassing body-shaming and misogynistic comments: Sharad Yadav often attracted controversies for making bizarre remarks about women and their bodies. In 2015, while giving a speech in Rajya Sabha during a discussion on the government's insurance bill, Sharad Yadav said that people in India are attracted towards lighter skin tones. He then said that despite having a darker skin tone, women in Southern parts of India are beautiful. Talking about it, he said,
"Your god is dark like Ravi Shankar Prasad (present in the House), but your matrimonial ads insist on white-skinned brides. The women of the south are dark but they are as beautiful as their bodies... We don't see it here. They know dance."
He also targeted Leslee Udwin, the producer of India's daughter, and said that she got permission to interview one of Nirbhaya's rapists because of her fair skin tone. [3]The Times of India During the discussion, he said,
"She must have got permissions easily because of her white skin."
While addressing a public gathering in 2017, in Patna, Sharad compared the dignity of a daughter with the dignity of a vote and said that the dignity of a vote is greater than that of a girl. In his controversial remark, he said that when the dignity of a girl is gone, the area where she resides also loses its dignity; whereas, when the dignity of a vote is sold, the whole nation also loses its dignity. [4]The Indian Express He further said,
"Wo thik hone mein ye jo ballot paper hai, yaad rakho iske baare mein sab jagah bade paimane pe batane or samjhane ki jarurat hai. Ye beti ki izzat se bhi vote ki izzat badhi hai. Beti ki izzat jaegi, toh gaon or mohalle ki izzat jaegi. Aur vote ek bar bik gaya, or ek baar gadbad hogaya toh ilake ki, desh ki aabaroo or aane wala sapna kabhi poora nahi hoga."
In 2018, while campaigning for the LJD during the 2018 Rajasthan Assembly elections, Sharad Yadav during a rally "fat shamed" the then-Chief Minister of Rajasthan Vasundhara Raje asking the public to give her a break as she has put on weight. [5]ANI - YouTube In his speech, he said,
"Aur ye Vasundhra ko aaram do, bahut thak gayi hain. Bohot moti ho gayi hai."
Following his speech, Sharad received criticism for his misogynistic comment. Vasundhara Raje and the BJP later complained to the election commission asking them to take action against Sharad for his remarks. In his defence, Sharad said that his remarks were meant as a joke and didn't mean to offend Vasundhara. He further added that he would write a letter to her apologizing to her for his "body shaming" remarks. [6]Outlook He said,
"I said it as a joke. I've old relations with her. It wasn't derogatory in any way. I had no intentions of hurting her. When I met her, I told her then also that you're gaining weight. I have seen her statement. I have family relations with her. If my words have hurt her, I express regret. I will also write a letter to her expressing my regret."
