ControversiesOpposing Raj Thackeray's Ayodhya visit
In May 2022, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh publicly urged the Indian politician Raj Thackeray to apologise for misbehaving with North Indians. Reportedly, in 2008, several people were beaten up by Thackeray's workers as they forced them to leave Mumbai because of their northern ethnicity. Thackeray led rallies in which he urged Yogi Adityanath to not meet Thackeray until he apologises.
"I will not allow Raj Thackeray, who humiliates North Indians, to enter Ayodhya. Before coming to Ayodhya, Raj Thackeray must apologise to all North Indians with folded hands. Unless Raj Thackeray publicly apologises, I request Chief Minister Shri Yogi Adityanath that he should not meet Raj Thackeray. RSS, VHP, and the common man played a role in the Ram temple movement. The Thackeray family has nothing to do with it." [1]The Indian Express

Inappropriate comments on political leaders

He also commented on Arvind Kejriwal that he was a crazy and clever man. While he was calling out people including Asaduddin Owaisi (AIMIM President), Brij talked about Yogi Adityanath and remarked that he was a child of Lord Ram. [2]ABP News

Wrestlers protest against Brij Bhushan Singh
On 18 January 2023, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat held a sit-in protest against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Phogat alleged that the WFI officials and coaches were harassing women. She also made allegations against the WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for sexually harassing many girls. She said,
“Some coaches who are favourites of the federation misbehave with women coaches as well. They sexually harass girls. The WFI president has sexually harassed so many girls."
Later, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh denied the allegations and said that there was no incident of sexual harassment. [5]The Hindu He also questioned why the protesting wrestlers never approached the federation for the past ten years and said that he would hang himself if the allegations will be proved true. Mr. Sharan Singh quoted,
"If such a thing has happened, then I will hang myself." In April 2023, some sources quoted that the accusations against him could not be proved. [6]The Economic Times On 23 April 2023, the wrestles again sat on protest at Jantar Mantar, demanding a case of sexual harassment to be registered against Brij Bhushan. The wrestlers claimed that the promises that were made to them were not held up and their demands had not been fulfilled despite assurances. [7]Hindustan Times On 25 April 2023, seven wrestlers moved the Supreme Court, seeking FIR against Brij Bhushan, following which the apex court issued notice to Delhi police and asked the Delhi police to respond as to why FIR be not registered against Brij Bhushan. [8]The Times of India On 28 April 2023, the Delhi Police registered two FIRs against Brij Bhushan; one FIR was related to allegations of a minor wrestler which was registered under the POCSO Act, while the second FIR was based on the complaints of the women wrestlers. Brij Bhushan's close aide and the federation’s assistant secretary Vinod Tomar was also named in the FIRs. [9]The Indian Express Following the FIR against him, Brij Bhushan called the protesters a stooge in the hands of the Congress and said that Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda and wrestler Bajrang Punia hatched a conspiracy against him. Mr. Singh also alleged that one of the key reasons behind the protests was the Phogat family wanted to take over the wrestling body. In the second leg of the wrestlers' protest, many politicians including Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, AAP ministers Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj, and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi visited the protest site; Pappu Yadav and Satya Pal Malik also visited the site. [10]Hindustan Times On 12 May 2023, he was officially ousted from the post of WFI President after the IOA, through a letter, asked the secretary general of WFI to hand over the official documents including financial instruments to its ad-hoc panel. The IOA's three-member ad-hoc committee announced that the new president will be elected within the 45-day time frame. [11]The Hindu On 25 June 2023, wrestlers called of their protest and decided to battle it out in court. [12]India Today On 18 July 2023, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court granted him interim bail for two days. [13]The Hindu On 20 July 2023, Rouse Avenue Court granted him regular bail. [14]The Economic Times On 23 September 2023, during a hearing at Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court, Additional Public Prosecutor Atul Srivastava, who was representing the Delhi police, asserted that Brij Bhushan was fully aware of his actions, with the intention to outrage the modesty of the wrestlers. Srivastava claimed that there were three evidences against Bhushan which included a written complaint and two recorded statements conducted under Sections 161 (witness examination by the police) and 164 (statements recorded by a Magistrate) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). According to Srivastava, these evidence were enough to frame charges against Bhushan. Srivastava further claimed that Bhushan had committed these offenses at various locations outside of Delhi. He added that Bhushan had committed offences whenever the opportunity arose. [15]India Today On 10 May 2024, the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi framed charges against him under Sections 354 (outraging modesty of a woman) and 354A (sexual harassment) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
