Some Lesser Known Facts About Kuljit Pal
- Kuljit Pal (1933-2023) was an Indian producer, director, and writer who worked in Hindi cinema. He is known for producing films like ‘Arth’ (1982) and ‘Aaj’ (1987). Kuljit is reportedly remembered as the person who first introduced the celebrated Indian actress Rekha to Hindi cinema. Pal passed away in June 2023 due to cardiac arrest.
- After debuting in Hindi cinema as a producer in 1968, Kuljit went on to produce many more films including the 1979 film ‘Do Shikaari,’ which starred Rekha and Vinod Khanna, ‘Arth’ (1982), ‘Aashiana’ (1986), and ‘Aaj’ (1987).
- In 1978, he worked as a writer for the film ‘Parmatma,’ starring Shatrughan Sinha and Rekha.
- Kuljit Pal is reported to have played a pivotal role in discovering Indian actress Rekha‘s talent, and he gave her her first break in the Hindi film industry with the film ‘Do Shikaari.’ The film project, however, was put on hold. In an interview, Kuljit recounted his first meeting with Rekha. He had travelled to Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu, intending to cast Indian actor Vanisri in his film ‘Do Shikaari’. Instead, he encountered a young girl, Rekha, in Vanisri’s room. Struck by her potential, Kuljit decided to run some dialogue tests with Rekha at her home. Although Rekha was not entirely proficient in the language, she managed to impress him. Subsequently, Kuljit brought Rekha to Mumbai and secured her a five-year contract in the film industry. Rekha then went on to star in films such as ‘Do Shikaari’ (1979) and more.
- In 2013, Kuljit Pal and Mahesh Bhatt locked horns over the remake rights of the 1982 film ‘Arth’. In an interview, Kuljit alleged that Mahesh had inappropriately granted consent to a Pakistani producer named Shaan to remake their classic film. Kuljit Pal said,
It appears that Mahesh Bhatt has committed an offence, misleading Pakistani producers by assigning them the rights of Arth that legally belong solely to us. You all are advised not to deal with Sri Mahesh Bhatt for Arth.”
Conversely, Mahesh Bhatt presented a different account. In an interview, he clarified that the Pakistani superstar Shaan had sought his approval for the Urdu remake of Arth. He added that he had indeed given his consent, as he believed it would strengthen the relations between India and Pakistan. [3]The Indian Express
