  • Meenakshi Natarajan was born and raised in a Tamil family, in Birlagram Nagda, Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh.
  • While studying at Devi Ahilya University, Ratlam, she started her political career after joining National Students’ Union of India.
  • In 1999, Meenakshi became the National President of NSUI. She held the position until 2002.
  • In 2002, Natarajan was appointed as the President of the Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress, where she worked on strengthening the Congress youth organization across Madhya Pradesh. She served the post until 2005.
  • In 2008, Indian National Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi, appointed her as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary.
  • She was among the first young Congress leaders chosen by Rahul Gandhi to help in strengthening and reorganizing the party in Madhya Pradesh.

  • Later, she was appointed as President of the Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Sangathan.

  • The objection against her nomination was raised by BJP leaders, who alleged that she had not disclosed details of a pending court case in Telangana in her 2026 Rajya Sabha election affidavit.
  • After her nomination was rejected many Congress leaders launched protests and accused Bharatiya Janata Party of trying to prevent the Congress party from contesting the Rajya Sabha election. Congress senior leader K.C. Venugopal, protested outside the Election Commission office, New Delhi.

  • Congress party’s Madhya Pradesh in-charge, Harish Chaudhary claimed that no criminal case has been filed against Meenakshi Natarajan. He also accused the BJP of raising such issues to harass her. He added that, Natarajan had only received a show-cause notice from the court and that it was not required to be mentioned in the nomination affidavit.
  • The Congress party submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission after Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination was rejected and requested a report from the Returning Officer regarding the controversy.
