ControversiesComments against Cricketer Rohit Sharma

Shama Mohamed posted on X during India's Champions Trophy clash against New Zealand on 3 March 2025. She called Rohit Sharma fat for a sportsman, said he needed to lose weight and described him as the most unimpressive captain India has ever had. When a Pakistan-based sports journalist pushed back and called Sharma a world class performer, Mohamed replied that he was a mediocre captain and a mediocre player who got lucky to lead India. She said his predecessors like Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Kapil Dev, and Ravi Shastri far outshone him. The remarks drew immediate criticism. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told NDTV that such comments in the middle of an ICC event could have a demoralising effect on a cricketer's morale. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said it was a shame that Congress had gone after the Indian cricket captain. Congress distanced itself from the remarks on the same day. Party publicity department chairman Pawan Khera said Mohamed had been asked to delete the concerned social media posts and advised to exercise greater caution in future. Mohamed then issued a clarification, saying she had spoken in a generic manner and failed to understand how her right to speak was being questioned in a democracy. By 4 March 2025, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had criticised the remarks. He said the Opposition party should leave sportspersons alone as they are fully capable of handling their professional lives. Mohamed responded on 4 March by bringing up a 2021 tweet by BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut in which Ranaut had criticised Rohit Sharma. Mohamed tagged Mandaviya and asked him to respond to Ranaut's old post. In that 2021 tweet, Ranaut had used a crass word for Sharma and questioned his stand during the farmers' protest against three now-scrapped agricultural laws. Ranaut had deleted the tweet later. Trinamool Congress MP Sougata Ray also said on 4 March that Mohamed had not said anything wrong.

Criticising Ananya Pandey for Bharatanatyam scene

On 24 May 2026, Mohamed shared her remarks on X, joining the swell of criticism. She wrote that Ananya Pandey has killed her favourite dance form and emphasized that classical dancing cannot be created for a film actress and requires years of study. She remembered her own training and concluded her narration with a direct plea to people to not insult Bharatanatyam.
