• Before becoming an independent editor, R. Kalaivanan worked as an assistant editor under editor Ruben. He spent around six years working with Ruben.

• During his assistant-editor years, he worked closely with director, Atlee Kumar for about four years. With Atlee he worked in films including Raja Rani (2013), Theri (2016), Mersal (2017), and Bigil (2019).

• In 2019, Kalaivanan became the editor of Thumbaa, a Tamil adventure film directed by Harish Ram L. H. The film received recognition for its visual effects and computer graphics.

• In 2021, R. Kalaivanan edited a Tamil web series, Akash Vaani.

• In 2024, he edited a film Amaran, directed by Rajkumar Periasamy.

• In an interview, Kalaivanan shared that he spent approximately two yeras working exclusively on Amaran. He added that he did not work on another filn alongside it because he was thinking about the project day and night.
