Some Lesser Known Facts About Dhananjay Singh

Apart from politics, Dhananjay Singh is also involved in business and farming.

In 1990, when a teacher named Govind Uniyal from Maharishi Vidya Mandir was murdered, Dhananjay was pursuing his high school education at that time. There were rumours that his name was mentioned in connection with this murder. However, the police could not prove these allegations against him in court.

Dhananjay Singh became known as a student activist during his time at Tilak Dhari (TD) College in Jaunpur.

During his college days, he started gaining attention for being involved in gang activities.

His opposition to certain government policies such as Mandal Commission recommendations, made him popular.

In 1992, Dhananjay Singh was accused of the murder of a young man when he was studying at Tilak Dhari (TD) College in Jaunpur. Reportedly, Dhananjay Singh took three exams in police custody.

He was charged four times under the Gangster Act from 1996 to 2013.

In October 1998, the police claimed that when Dhananjay Singh was robbing a petrol pump, he was killed in an encounter; however, he was seen alive after four months. An investigation was started and cases were filed against 34 police officers for false claims.

He then connected with gangster Abhay Singh in Lucknow, but they later became enemies.

In 2000, Dhananjay Singh was arrested for being involved in the murder of the then health and family welfare director general of Uttar Pradesh. He was released from jail in May 2010.

He then joined hands with Vinod Nate, who was preparing to contest Lok Sabha assembly elections from Jaunpur’s Rari constituency. However, Vinod Nate was killed in an accident before the 2002 election.

Dhananjay Singh then joined politics and won elections from the Rari constituency in Uttar Pradesh in 2002 as an Independent candidate.

During some political rallies, he held Vinod Nate’s picture close to his chest.

On 12 December 2006, Dhananjay Singh married his first wife, Meenu. On 12 September 2007, she died ten months after her marriage. After her death, her family members claimed that she committed suicide; however, the police suspected foul play behind the death.

He continued his political career, winning again in 2007 with a Janata Dal-United (JD-U) ticket. Later, he joined the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

On 29 June 2009, he married his second wife, Dr Jagriti Singh. In 2012, she contested the assembly elections as an independent candidate from Malhani in the Jaunpur constituency.

In 2017, after a mutual disagreement, Dhananjay Singh and Jagriti got separated.

In the same year, he married his third wife, Srikala Reddy, a BJP politician, who won the Jaunpur zila panchayat (district council) chairperson election in July 2021.

Dhananjay’s influence and connections in the BSP started to decline in 2011. He was officially suspended from the party after he met Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.

He was then arrested for a double murder, and the BSP denied a ticket for the 2012 Assembly election to his father.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Dhananjay Singh fought as an independent candidate from the Jaunpur constituency and lost.

He then contested the 2017 assembly election from Malhani constituency on the ticket of the Nishad party and lost to SP candidate Parasnath Yadav.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Dhananjay Singh did not get the ticket from any party.

In the 2020 Malhani by-poll, he contested as an independent nominee and lost to Parasnath Yadav’s son Lucky Yadav by 4,000 votes.

In May 2020, Dhananjay Singh and one of his close aides were arrested by Line Bazar police from his residence in Jaunpur. The arrest was made on charges of kidnapping and threatening a project manager of UP Jal Nigam. In January 2021, Lucknow police suspected Dhananjay Singh’s links in the murder of Ajit Singh, a gangster and politician, who went out of his bulletproof SUV to have a snack by the roadside. Four men on motorcycles shot 25 bullets at Ajit Singh.

In Ajit Singh’s murder investigation, police suspected that the shooters had stayed in Dhananjay Singh’s Lucknow flat before the murder. Police also claimed that when one of the shooters needed medical help, Dhananjay and his associate contacted the doctors.

Soon, the Lucknow police announced a reward of Rs. 25000 on Dhananjay Singh. He surrendered before a Prayagraj court in March 2021. However, later, he managed to get bail and fled.

Police then raided all his illegal houses and farmhouses in Uttar Pradesh and sent a letter to the Income Tax Department and the Enforcement Directorate for further investigations.

In 2022, three dozen criminal cases were filed against Dhananjay Singh.

The Uttar Pradesh Police’s Special Task Force (STF) took over Ajit Singh’s case after the Lucknow police failed to arrest him. STF stated in their investigations that there was no evidence of his direct involvement in the murder case and withdrew all criminal conspiracy charges against him.

Dhananjay Singh then filed his nomination from Malhani Assembly seat on a JD-U ticket in February 2022 and actively campaigned for the elections.

On 6 March 2024, he and his close associate Satish Vikram Singh were awarded seven years imprisonment by the court of MP-MLA court of Jaunpur. He was accused in a case of kidnapping, extortion, and criminal conspiracy and the complaint was filed in May 2020 in Line Bazar police station in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh.

In April 2024, BSP granted a ticket to his wife, Srikala Reddy, from the Jaunpur constituency in Uttar Pradesh during the general elections.
