  • Smriti Chauhan hails fromm Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.
  • She grew up in a film-loving family, which shaped her interest in cinema.
  • Over time, she knew she wanted to be part of filmmaking, but was not sure how exactly.
  • Smriti initially worked in different fields, including corporate and television. She later entered the film industry and started out as an assistant director on a fillm by actor and screenwriter Saurabh Shukla.
  • She later worked on another project and shared her inputs on costumes for a period film, which made people notice her natural eye for styling and encouraged her to seriously pursue costume design.
  • Smriti never had formal training in costume designing and learnt everything while working on projects. While talking about this in an interview, she said,

    I have no academic training in costume design, I have learnt everything on the job. But I came in with some knowledge and ability because when I was young, I would stitch clothes at home with my mom and grandmother. My foundation was laid there in terms of pattern making and stitching.”

  • Smriti has worked as a costume designer for various films, including ‘Monsoon Shootout’ (2013), ‘The Royal Bengal Tiger’ (2014), ‘What Are the Odds’ (2019), and ‘Angrezi Medium’ (2020).

  • Smriti has also worked as a costume designer for various series, such as ‘Delhi Crime’ (2019) (Netflix), ‘Dahaad’ (2023) (Amazon Prime Video), ‘Kaala Paani’ (2023) (Netflix), and ‘Poacher’ (2024) (Malayalam) (Amazon Prime Video).

  • In 2021, she worked on a black comedy drama film titled ‘The White Tiger,’ which starred Priyanka Chopra, Adarsh Gourav, and Rajkummar Rao.

  • She has also worked on a few short films, including ‘Starch’ (2023) and ‘Cow Heavy and Floral’ (2024).
  • Smriti gained great recognition for her work as a costume designer for the spy action-thriller films ‘Dhurandhar’ (2025) and ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ (2026), directed by Aditya Dhar.
  • Although some pointed out Dhurandhar’s mix of real and fictional elements and called it a “propaganda” film, it still became a massive hit. The film crossed Rs. 1000 crore and earned over Rs. 1350 core worldwide, making it the 4th Indian film to do so.
  • ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ was also received high appreciation for its overall quality. It did very well at the box office and crossed Rs. 1000 crore within a week. It became the 5th Hindi film to reach this mark.
  • While working on Dhurandhar, action scenes were a bit tough to design, as she had to keep continuity right and choose textured and rugged fabrics  instead of flat ones.
  • Smriti showed Ranvir Singh’s transformation from Jaskirat to Hamza by moving from simple 2000s clothes to rugged earthy Pathani looks that suited action and helped him blend in.

  • One of the hardest parts for her was designing the Baluchi salwar, which started from the boots and took many fabric trials and 17-18 versions to get right along with hidden details.
  • While designing Akshaye Khanna’s ‘Sher-e-Baloch’ moment, she followed Aditya Dhar’s brief to make him stand out and dressed him in black, while others wore different tones. She even added sunglasses on the spot to enhance the look.
