  • Abu Azmi is an Indian politician and a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He represents the Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar constituency in Maharashtra, which is located in the Mumbai Suburban District. Abu Azmi is a member of the Samajwadi Party and holds the position of President in the party’s Maharashtra state branch.
  • Abu Azmi was detained on 6 March 1993 in connection with the Mumbai bomb blast. Azmi was sentenced to a year in prison until the Supreme Court of India found him not guilty of the accusations. Abu Azmi then decided to enter politics. [14]Dainik Bhaskar
  • In 1995, Azmi joined politics. The same year, he led the Samajwadi Party (SP) to win two seats in the Maharashtra state assembly.

  • In the 2009 Lok Sabha election, Abu Asim Azmi was defeated by Gurudas Kamat of the Congress party. However, he was elected to the Maharashtra Assembly in the same year and served two terms. He contested the Maharashtra Assembly elections from the two constituencies, the Mankhurd-Shivaji Nagar and Bhiwandi (East), and won. However, the rules allowed candidates to represent only one region, so he chose the Mankhurd-Shivaji Nagar constituency.
  • In April 2009, the Kherwadi police summoned Abu Shahid Azmi, the brother of Abu Asim Azmi, in connection with an alleged money transfer case.   • In 2013, during a media conversation, when asked about the Shakti Mill Rape Case, Azmi spoke that whether rape occurred with or without consent, it should be punished according to Islamic law. He said,

    Any woman if, whether married or unmarried, goes along with a man, with or without her consent, should be hanged. Rape is punishable by hanging in Islam. But here, nothing happens to women, only to men. Even the woman is guilty. Girls complain when someone touches them, and even when someone doesn’t touch them. It becomes a problem then … If rape happens with or without consent, it should be punished as prescribed in Islam.”

  • In July 2023, Abu Asim Azmi claimed that he cannot chant Vande Mataram because Islam forbids it and that doing so does not imply contempt for the country. Soon after his comment in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, a significant political controversy occurred in Maharashtra. He said that his religion did not permit him to say ‘Vande Mataram.’ He said,

    Islam teaches us to bow down before the one who created this whole world. According to my religion, if I cannot recite Vande Mataram, then it does not reduce my respect for my country and my patriotism, and no one should have any objection to this.”
