Political Journey• In 1985, Ajay Maken started his political jounrney as president of the
Delhi University Student’s Union (DUSU).
• In 1993, Ajay Maken became a Member of Delhi Legislative Assembly from the Rajouri Garden constituency. He won the same seat again in 1998 and 2003.
• 1999, he was appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in Delhi Government; he served the post till 2001.
• In 2001, Maken was appointed as the Cabinet Minister of Transport and Power in Delhi Government.
• In 2004, he was elected as Speaker of Delhi Legislative Assembly.
• He won the 2004 Lok Sabha elections from the New Delhi constituency.
• In 2004, he held many positions including Member of General Purposes Committee, Member of Rules Committee, Member of Committee on Information Technology, Member of House Committee, Member of Panel of Chairmen for Lok Sabha, and Secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC).
• In 2006, he became the Union Minister of State for Urban Development.
• In 2007, he held an Independent charge as Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports. In the same year, he became the permanent member of the All India Congress Committee.
• In 2009, he was appointed as the Minister of State for Home Affairs.
• In 2011, he was appointed as the Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs.
• In 2012, he became the Union Cabinet Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation under Manmohan Singh's government.
• In 2014, he contested the Lok Sabha elections from the New Delhi constituency but was defeated by the BJP candidate.
• In 2014, he was appointed as the Congress General Secretary and served till 2015.
• In 2023, he was appointed as the Treasurer of the All India Congress Committee by the party president Mallikarjun Kharge.

  • Ajay Maken’s father turned him down when he first stated his desire to become a politician because Ajay’s uncles were also politicians and had died young.
  • His maternal grandfather, Jagat Ram, and his paternal grandfather, O. P. Maken, were Indian freedom fighters.
  • His uncle Lalit Maken entered politics after his brother Satya Prakash Maken, a Metropolitan Councilor, was assassinated at the age of 26.
  • Lalit Maken rose to prominence as a trade union leader and member of parliament. He was wed to Gitanjali, the daughter of India’s ninth president, Shankar Dayal Sharma. Amid accusations that he was involved in the 1984 Sikh riots, Maken and his wife were shot and killed in July 1985 outside their house in Kirti Nagar, Delhi,  by Harjinder Singh Jinda, Sukhdev Singh Sukha, and Ranjit Singh Gill, also known as Kukki.
  • Ajay Maken entered active politics following the assassinations of Lalit Maken and his wife, Gitanjali.
