Controversies | The Singhania Legacy Dispute: In 2015, a family dispute arose when Gautam Singhania inherited his father Vijaypat Singhania’s 37.17% stake in Raymond. In his autobiography, ‘An Incomplete Life: The Autobiography,’ Vijaypat revealed that although his friends suggested him not to handover the Raymond legacy to Gautam, he trusted Gautam not to mistreat him. According to Vijaypat, he resigned from his position of the chairman on 13 February 2015 following which he expected to get an apartment at his ancestral building, JK House, at Altamount Road, Mumbai, as per a 2007 family agreement; however, Gautam directed the board members not to allot him any apartment. Gautam Singhania later addressed the matter in an interview and clarified that the amendments in the Companies Act 2013 prevented the allotment. Amid reports of the feud, Vijaypat accused Gautam of taking his belongings, including documents and a gold medal, from his Mahindra Tower cabin in Worli. Gautam, however, later talked about it in an interview and denied the allegations, stating that Vijaypat was seeking media attention and cheap publicity. Vijaypat later moved to the Bombay High Court to seek his right on the property. The dispute over property continued; however, it was eventually closed after nearly a decade of legal proceedings, and Vijaypat could not get the apartment in the JK House. The Alleged Abuse and Physical Assault: On 13 November 2023, Singhania announced his separation from Nawaz following which Nawaz claimed that Gautam used to abuse her and their daughter Niharika. According to sources, Gautam once caused her sacrum (a wedge-shaped bone in the back of the pelvis) to crack due to which she was admitted to the Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre in Mumbai. During this time, the Ambanis reportedly offered support to Nawaz. [8]Deccan Chronicle On 22 November 2023, Nawaz, in an interview, confirmed that Gautam had physically assaulted her and expelled her from the company. In the interview, she admitted that the first incident took place on the morning of 10 September 2023, following Gautam’s birthday celebration on the 9th. After the celebration, Gautam beat Nawaz and their daughter Niharika for around 15 minutes, and then, he suddenly left the scene of the attack. While talking about the same in the interview, Nawaz said I have had two hernia surgeries – one was during the time of my pregnancy and the other was because I had an ectopic pregnancy and had a fallopian tube removed, which resulted in another hernia. He knew that, and still flung me around the room several times. He was just going all out for Niharika and me, and we were just trying to protect each other." Nawaz further mentioned that the reason behind the fight was a disagreement between them which was about power and control. She said, I wanted to use my bathroom when I was using it. Now, he has two other bathrooms which are also touching our bedroom. Three more (bathrooms are) on the same floor and a 39-storey tower full of bathrooms. It was just about power and control." According to Nawaz, she filed a non-cognizable report against Gautam three times earlier, but he did not allow the police into his home. In an interview, she mentioned that Ambanis helped her file a Non-Cognizable Offense report. Nawaz further explained that she chose not to convert the NC into an FIR because domestic violence carried a non-bailable offence with a three-year sentence involving imprisonment and hard labour. She mentioned that by taking this approach, she was trying to save her relationship, hoping Gautam would do the right thing. [9]Business Today |
