On 6 July 2022, the Trinamool Congress distanced itself from Mahua Moitra's remarks on Goddess Kali. In a statement on social media, the party said, “The comments made by @MahuaMoitra at the #IndiaTodayConclaveEast2022 and her views expressed on Goddess Kali have been made in her personal capacity and are NOT ENDORSED BY THE PARTY in ANY MANNER OR FORM. All-India Trinamool Congress strongly condemns such comments." [2]The Hindu • In August 2022, a video went viral on social media in which Moitra was purportedly hiding her ‘expensive’ Louis Vuitton bag as soon as TMC’s Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar raised the issue of price rise in the Lok Sabha. The video became the point of many discussions, mostly negative. Later, she shared a photo collage on Twitter with several pictures of herself with the caption “Jholewala fakir in Parliament since 2019. Jhola leke aye the jhola leke chal padenge." [3]India Today • On 7 February 2023, she attracted controversy for using cuss words while addressing the Lok Sabha during the Motion of Thanks on the President's Address. She said, "Whatever I said was not on record and all I can say is I will call an apple an apple and not an orange. I will call a spade a spade. If they take me to the privileges committee, I will put my side of the story." [4]Hindustan Times • Mahua Moitra was accused of taking a bribe in October 2023. Nishikant Dubey, a politician, levelled allegations against Mahua and claimed that she took cash and gifts from a businessman named Darshan Hiranandani in exchange of asking questions in Parliament. While making these allegations against Mahua, Nishikant wrote to the Lok Sabha speaker on 15 October 2023 and demanded an enquiry into the matter. Mahua, however, refuted the claims later on X and dismissed them as baseless and unfounded. [5]India Today Mahua, however, in an interview on 28 October 2023, agreed that she had shared her Parliament login details with Darshan. Her purpose was to enable him to add questions to her account, which she would later raise in the Lok Sabha. [6]India Today Mahua Moitra said, Someone in Darshan Hiranandani’s office typed the question which I gave on the Parliament website. After putting the question, they would call me to inform and I would read all the questions in one go as I am always busy in my constituency. After putting the question, an OTP (one-time password) comes on my mobile phone. I would give that OTP and only then is the question submitted. So, the idea that Darshan would log in to my ID and put in questions of his own is ludicrous." Mahua Moitra was expelled from the Lok Sabha on 8 December 2023. She, however, later questioned the findings of the Lok Sabha's Ethics Committee, which had declared her guilty. On 11 December 2023, Mahua took the matter to the Supreme Court of India to challenge the committee's report.
