- After completing her formal education, Smita Prakash started working at the Asian News International as an intern in 1986. Later, she became a full time editor of the news agency.
- She rose to immense fame as an ‘independent journalist’ after she interviewed Narendra Modi before the 2014 Indian General Elections.
- She has also worked for several foreigner broadcasters including NPR News America and NHK Japan.
- In 2005, she was chosen by Ministry of External Affairs as one of the two Indian journalists to attend joint press conferences between the prime ministers of India and the United States.
