• He was born in Nagpur and did his schooling from Delhi and completed his graduation from Rohtak, Haryana. He went to Pune and joined Film and Television Institute of India.

• His career started in Bollywood as an actor, playing minuscule roles in movies such as “Taqdeer” (1967) and “Aradhana” (1971).

• In Umang and Gumraah, he played the male lead role.

• In 1982, he launched ‘Mukta Arts’, his film production company and has produced many movies under its banner since then. 

• He made his directorial debut with “Kalicharan“ starring Shatrughan Sinha.

• In the 1980s and 1990s, his collaboration with Dilip Kumar whom he directed in “Vidhaata” (1982), “Karma” (1986), and “Saudagar” (1991), was a success. Later, Ghai won the Filmfare Best Director Award for Saudagar.

• He also introduced Jackie Shroff; making him the lead actor in “Hero” (1983) and assisted actors like Anil Kapoor in uplifting their career.

• In 1991, with 42 Bollywood stars, 250 dancers, and 200 musicians, he organized and directed a Magnum Audi Visual stage show ‘CINEMA CINEMA’ to celebrate 100 years of world cinema at NSCI Mumbai.

• In 1993, two of the songs “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai” and “Nayak Nahin Khalnayak Hu Main” of his movie “Khalnayak” starring Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, and Jackie Shroff became very popular because of the controversial lyrics they had.

• He gave newcomers Apurva Agnihotri and Mahima Chaudhry a chance to launch themselves and to work with Shah Rukh Khan in “Pardes.” In 1999, his directorial “Taal” starring Akshaye Khanna, Anil Kapoor, and Aishwarya Rai was released. Both of his movies were released internationally and received a huge commercial and critical acclaim.

• He was the first in the film industry to introduce insurance policy with his movie “Taal” and also took the initiative of banks to finance movies.

• He took a  break from the industry when his movies (Yaadein in 2001 and Kisna in 2005) failed at the box office.

• He made a come back by turning into a producer and produced movies including Aitraaz (2004), Iqbal (2005), 36 China Town (2006), and Apna Sapna Money Money (2006).

• He established his own film institute ‘Whistling Woods International’ in Mumbai in 2006. It gives training in the areas: direction, animation, cinematography, production, and acting.

• After a break of three years, he returned back to direction with “Black and White” and “Yuvvraaj” in 2008.

• He is also credited to have produced some regional movies like ‘Double Di Trouble’ in Punjabi, ‘Nauka Dubi’ in Bengali, ‘Sanai Chaughade’ and ‘Samhita’ in Marathi.

• He contributed to Bollywood by launching and grooming stars like Meenakshi Sheshadri, Manisha Koirala, Madhuri Dixit, Aishwarya Rai, Javed Jaffrey, Anurag Sinha, Kareena Kapoor, and Katrina Kaif.

• According to a survey in 2016, he had directed and written a total of 16 movies in his career.

• A. R. Rahman revealed in an interview that Subhash Ghai once suggested him to use “Jai ho” in a song.
