Some Lesser Known Facts About Honey Trehan
- Although Honey Trehan was born in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, however, he originally hails from Tarn Taran, Punjab.
- In an interview, he revealed that before he was born, his grandfather passed away, after that his mother went to stay at her aunt’s home in Sagar. He was born there, but his parents moved back to Tarn Taran just four days after his birth, where he spent his early childhood.
- When Honey was seven years old, his family moved to Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh from Tarn Taran, Punjab.
- As a child, he developed a deep interest in films after regularly watching films in theatre and on television, which inspired him to pursue a career in cinema.
- In an interview, Honey revealed that when he was in school, he met National School of Drama, New Delhi’s faculty member Vageesh Kumar Singh, which inspired him to involved in theatre at a young age.
- In 1997, Honey joined Barry John’s acting school in New Delhi, where he was more interested in directing the plays rather than acting.
- After moving to New Delhi, he also worked with actor-writer, Piyush Mishra and his Aarambh Theatre Group for nearly two years. During this time, he worked as play actor, writer, production designer, and handled production managements.
- While he was still a teenager, he directed his first stage play titled, Kafan, based on Munshi Premchand‘s famous short story.
- In 2000, Honey moved to Mumbai to build career in the Bollywood Film industry.
- Soon after moving to Mumbai, he met filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj and began working as his assistant director.
- In 2002, Honey received his first official casting credit because of his contribution in the film Makdee.

- He also cast several actors in unconventional roles, including Saif Ali Khan as Langda Tyagi in Omkara (2006), Deepak Dobriyal in Omkara (2006), Amole Gupte in Kaminey (2009), and singer Usha Uthup in 7 Koon Maaf (2011).
- Besides casting Honey Trehan also worked as assistant director in films, including, Delly Belly (2011), Holiday (2014), Raees (2017), and Fukrey Returns (2017).
- For over nearly two decades, Honey Trehan and Vishal Bhardwaj worked together. People in the Hindi film industry often referred to Trehan as Vishal Bhardwaj’s “right hand man” because of their long professional collaboration.
- In 2015, along with filmmaker Abhishek Chaubey and Vishal Bhardwaj, Honey Trehan co-founded his production house, MacGuffin Pictures. A Death in the Gunj (2016) was the first film of his production house.
- Honey Trehan was the key person in bringing Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh into Hindi cinema by casting him in Udta Punjab (2016).
- In 2017, Honey was set to make his directional debut with the film Sapna Didi, where Vishal was producing the film.
- The film was based on a chapter from Hussain Zaidi‘s Mafia Queen of Mumbai, where actress Deepika Padukone and late actor Irfan Khan were planned to be in the lead roles.
- However, in December 2017, Vishal announced that he would replaced Trehan as the film’s director because of “creative differences” between them.
- In a statement Vishal said that he and Honey Trehan had mutually took the decision. He said,
Due to different artistic visions of the film, Honey and I jointly came to the decision that it would be best if I took over as director.”
- However, their decision surprised many in the film industry because of their close professional bond. The film, Sapna Didi was eventually cancelled due to several setbacks, including Irfan Khan’s illness and death, production challenges, and COVID-19 pandemic.
- After parting ways with Bhardwaj on Sapna Didi, instead of waiting for another large-scale project, Honey made his directional debut with the Netflix crime thriller film Raat Akeli Hai (2020), starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte. The film received positive reviews for its storytelling and strong performances. It also established Honey Trehan as a filmmaker rather than just a casting director.
- After this, in 2022, Honey also moved into film production as the sole producer of the film Sharmaji Namkeen. The film was the last film of actor Rishi Kapoor, which was completed by Paresh Rawal after Kapoor’s death.
- In July 2026, Honey Trehan came into news after his film Satluj.
- The film was based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, starring Diljit Dosanjh as Jaswant Singh Khalra.
- Honey co-wrote the film with Niran Bhatt and Utsav Maitra.
- In 2023, the film was scheduled to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF); however, the screening was cancelled after objections were reportedly raised by the Indian authorities.
- Before its release, the film faced several hurdles from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Reportedly about 127 cuts were made before granting certification.
- On 3 July 2026, the film was quietly released on the streaming platform Zee5.
- However, the film was removed from Zee5 within 48 hours after its release and became one of the most talked about Indian films of 2026. It also brought Honey Trehan national recognition as a filmmaker.
