Controversies | Accusations of encouraging the Sati practice [1]The Hindu [2]Dainik Bhaskar On 4 September 1987, a young woman named Roop Kanwar from Jaipur, reportedly aged either 17 or 18, committed Sati by burning herself alive on her husband's pyre in Deorala village, Sikar. This act sparked widespread attention, leading to the establishment of memorial temples in villages; however, women's rights organizations deemed it a murder and prompted an investigation ordered by Rajasthan Chief Minister Haridev Joshi. On 15 September 1987, the Rajasthan High Court banned the proposed Chunri ceremony; however, on 16 September 1987, despite the ban, many people gathered at Deorala village and conducted the ceremony. It was alleged that the Dharma Raksha Samiti organized a rally on 28 October 1987, where slogans glorifying the Sati practice were raised, and Pratap Singh Khachriyawas was among the convenors. After more than 15 years of court proceedings, the Special Court acquitted 11 individuals, including Pratap Singh Khachriyawas, Rajendra Singh Rathore, and Narayan Singh Rajawat, in 2004. Accusations of land scam [3]Aaj Tak In August 2020, Pratap Singh Khachariyawas, along with his brother Karan Singh Khachariyawas and father Laxman Singh Khachariyawas, received a notice from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) concerning a land purchase case. Allegations surfaced that Pratap, along with his brother and father, was involved in purchasing lands near the Pakistan border on behalf of the family company, acting as agents for a power company called PSL. The notice raised suspicions about financial transactions related to these land deals. In response to the notice, Pratap accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of playing a mean game and targeting his elderly father. He expressed his belief that his father was unnecessarily troubled in his old age. Pratap stated his intention to present his statement at the Delhi ED office as required. He also mentioned plans to meet with several prominent political figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP's national president JP Nadda, and Rajnath Singh, to discuss the matter. Following a seven-hour interrogation in August 2020, he expressed his belief in an interview and claimed that the case was politically motivated. He mentioned that the case had already been closed at the Jaipur ED office, but it was intentionally reopened to prevent him from voicing his views against the BJP-led central government. Pratap Singh, in the interview, said, "Notice by the Enforcement Directorate could have been given after our majority was proven. Is this the time to give the notice? They want to ensure that Khachariyawas does not speak much. Today, there is BJP government at the Centre. Tomorrow, it would be the Congress government. Agencies, that are used politically, are good neither for the BJP nor for the Congress." [4]India Today |
