- Umesh Yadav liked playing cricket since his childhood and often played with his friends.
- He has ran in several athletic events such as 100-meter, 200-meter, and 400-meter races. He once ran a 100-meter race in 10.56 seconds.
- He initially wanted to join the Indian Army, but after his rejection there, he applied for a police constable’s job but missed the opportunity by just 2 points.
- When he turned 20, one of his friends advised him to start playing cricket to earn money.
- He has played in a few local cricket tournaments. His excellent performance in the local tournaments earned him a chance to play for Vidarbha Gymkhana.
- The then-secretary of the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) saw him in a match and was impressed with his talent. He later enrolled Yadav in the summer camp of VCA.
- In an interview, he revealed that earlier he did not know about the cricket spikes and went to the summer camp of VCA wearing ordinary shoes because of which his local coach asked him to leave the camp.
- In an interview, Yadav mentioned that he never forgot that incident and took motivation from that day to work hard and achieve something big.
- Pritam Gandhe, then-captain of Vidarbha’s Ranji trophy team, was also impressed by Yadav’s bowling talent. He once fought with his coach to include him in the Vidarbha Ranji team.
