Controversy | Defamation Threat Amid Allegations Against Assam Chief Minister and His Wife: In September 2023, Gaurav Gogoi found himself facing the threat of a defamation lawsuit from the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife. In the same year, Gogoi made allegations against Sarma and his wife, alleging that they had obtained a Rs. 10 crore subsidy from the Assam Government under the Prime Minister’s Kisan Sampada Yojana. In an interview, Gogoi claimed that Biswa's wife had improperly secured this subsidy for her company, Pride East Entertainment Private Limited. Furthermore, he called for Biswa's resignation from the position of Chief Minister of Assam due to his alleged involvement. Gogoi said, It hardly matters how much money has been credited to the account of the Chief Minister’s family. Government subsidies should be given to local entrepreneurs and farmers genuinely in need of support." Biswa and his wife, however, later addressed the issue in an interview and denied the accusations. They even mentioned taking legal action against Gogoi for defamation. Biswa also expressed his willingness to step down from his post if concrete evidence surfaced against him and his wife. In the interview, Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, said that she would file a defamation case against Gogoi to protect the reputation of her company and its hardworking employees. [7]The Hindu She said, I am, therefore, forced to initiate a lawsuit of defamation with Rs 10 crore damages against Gaurav Gogoi in the court of law to defend the reputation of our hardworking employees from this slanderous campaign by him." |
