Controversies | • During her initial days in Bollywood, she was in a relationship with Aditya Pancholi, who was around 20 years older than her and already married. However, things got complicated when she accused Aditya of violence and broke up with him. • After her break up with Adhyayan Suman, he said, "I was emotionally badgered because of my relationship. Kangna only knows how to use, abuse and throw. She has flooded me with abusive calls ever since the truth about her fake claims came out. I have remained silent on her abusive nature for so many years, but she is crossing all limits now. Since I haven’t been taking her calls, her aides have been calling my mother and harassing her." • She is known for her bold statements, but she made a blunder during a chat show by saying that, "Just good friends could be friendship plus f**k buddies. Just friends in Bollywood mean f**k buddies who are little promoted." • During the 2012 Blender Pride Fashion Week, in Mumbai, she suffered a wardrobe malfunction while walking the ramp for designer Gavin Miguel. • She and Hrithik Roshan had a media-led fight which started off with her calling him as a "silly ex", and later resulted in full-blown name-calling, e-mail leaking, legal battle. • In 2018, during the MeToo movement, Kangana Ranaut alleged that Vikas Bahl had harassed her on the sets of 'Queen.' • In January 2019, just before the release of her film 'Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi,' the Karni Sena threatened the makers of the film that if the image of Rani Lakshmibai is maligned in the film, then makers will have to "face consequences." To which Kangana strongly replied, "Four historians have certified 'Manikarnika', we have got censor certificate as well, Karni Sena has been conveyed this but they are continuing to harass me. If they don't stop then they should know I am also a Rajput and I will destroy each one of them." • Kangana Ranaut and Sanjay Raut of the Shiv Sena locked in a bitter war of words since Kangana termed Mumbai unsafe after the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Earlier, her comment that she feared living in Mumbai had led to a severe backlash from the Shiv Sena, and the state's home minister Anil Deshmukh said she had no right to stay in Mumbai. Kangana accused Sena leaders like Sanjay Raut of threatening her and remarked "why is Mumbai feeling like Pakistan-occupied- Kashmir." This comment escalated the row between Kangana and Shiv Sena. [1]NDTV Later, the Centre government sanctioned "Y-plus" security cover to Kangana Ranaut; with this, the actress had a total of 11 CRPF personnel for her personal protection. [2]The Times of India • Amid the row between Kangana Ranaut and Maharashtra Government, the BMC officials served a notice under section 354/ A of the Municipal Corporation Act after inspection to Kangana Ranaut and pasted the notice at her office gate in Mumbai. The notice pointed out over a dozen alterations in the bungalow, like a "toilet being converted into office cabin" and "new toilets being constructed alongside the staircase." [3]The Times of India • In December 2020, she attracted controversy after she misidentified an elderly woman as the 'Dadi' (Bilkis Bano of Shaheen Bagh fame) through a tweet in which she doubted the intention of her taking part in the ongoing farmers' protest against the central government's newly drafted farmer's bills. Later, the elderly woman was found to be a Sikh woman, Mahinder Kaur. Punjabi actor and singer Diljit Dosanjh took to Twitter to condemn Kangana's remarks on the elderly woman, and this Twitter war became intense after Kangana retaliated and addressed Diljit a ‘pet’ of filmmaker Karan Johar. Later, Kangana received criticisms from many celebrities including Swara Bhaskar, Richa Chadda, Ammy Virk, Mika Singh, and others. [4]Hindustan Times • On 1 February 2021, she received a summon from a metropolitan magistrate court in Mumbai to appear on 1 March 2021. The summon was issued after a criminal complaint filed by lyricist Javed Akhtar in which he alleged that on 19 July 2020, during an interview, Ms. Ranaut linked his name to Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput's alleged suicide case. [5]The Hindu • On 4 May 2021, her Twitter account was permanently suspended after she posted a series of controversial tweets. Following the result of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly Elections, violence erupted in the state, and Kangana took to Twitter to give a piece of her mind and said that violence could only be stopped through violence. [6]The Hindu On 24 January 2023, her Twitter account was reinstated after nearly two years. [7]The Hindu • Chandigarh Airport slap incident On 6 June 2024, a woman personnel named Kulwinder Kaur belonging to the Central Industrial Security Force slapped Kangana at Chandigarh airport. [8]The Hindu Kulwinder Kaur also shared a video in which she said that her mother had participated in the 2020-21 protest by farmers against (now-scrapped) three farm laws. Kaur said that she slapped Kangana as she was upset by Kangana's comment in December 2020 that people were willing to join the protest for as low as Rs. 100. [9]NDTV Kangana also shared a story on Instagram condemning Bollywood for not speaking out on the incident; however, she later deleted the story. • War of words with Annu Kapoor During the press conference of Annu Kapoor's film Hamare Barah, he was asked about Kangana Ranaut's slap incident at Chandigarh Airport to which he seemed unaware of her identity and said, “Yeh Kangana ji kaun hain? Please batao na kaun hain? Zaahir hai aap pooch rahe hain toh koi bahut badi heroine hongi? Sundar hain kya?” A journalist later told him that Kangana was an elected Member of Parliament to which Annu Kapoor said, “Oho woh bhi ho gayi! Abhi toh bahut shaktishaali ho gayi hain. Ek sundar hai toh hume waese hi unse jalan horahi hai kyuki hum toh bohut bhadde...aadmi hai. Uske baad powerful hai. Aap bolrahe hai kisi officer nein unhe thappad maar diya? Toh unko puri kaarwahi karni chahiye definitely.” Kangana Ranaut later posted a reply on her Instagram story where she wrote, “Do you agree with Annu Kapoor ji that we tend to hate a successful woman, hate her more if she is beautiful and hate her even more passionately if she is powerful? Is it true?” Annu Kapoor later responded to her reaction to his comments and posted an apology letter on social media and clarified that not knowing someone was not a crime. • Javed Akhtar sought non-bailable warrant against her In July 2024, Javed Akhtar requested the court to issue a non-bailable warrant against Kangana Ranaut for her continuous non appearance in court. The case was related to a meeting at Akhtar's Mumbai residence in March 2016, where Akhtar asked Kangana to apologise to Hrithik Roshan. Kangana and Roshan had war of words over some exchanged emails. [10]India Today In September 2024, the case was transferred to a Special Magistrate Court in Mumbai as she became an MP in June 2024. She was also criticised by the netizens for sharing such photos. • Criticised for Her Remarks In the same month, Kangana Ranaut hit the headlines after she uploaded a tweet on X claiming that the farmer's protests could have led to a Bangladesh-type situation in India had the Indian government not handled it correctly. She also claimed that during the protests, many dead bodies were found hanging and that there were instances of sexual abuse as well. Following her remarks, she received criticism from many politicians and netizens. The BJP also criticised her for her remarks and said, "It is not Kangana's department to speak on farmers, Kangana's statement is personal. PM Modi and BJP are farmer friendly. The opposition parties are working against us and Kangana's statement is doing the same." [12]India Today Later, she released a statement saying that her views on the farm laws were personal, and it did not represent the views of the party. • Remarks on Atul Subhash's Suicide She received criticism in December 2024 after she commented on the death of the Bengaluru-based techie Atul Subhash, who ended his life due to problems in marriage.
